U.S. stocks finished nearly flat Thursday as a late recovery erased most of the damage from rising oil prices and bond yields.
Trump and Xi met on the red carpet, and one flinched when military jets soared overhead. The big show continues with their dinner tonight in Washington, flanked by any AI lab tech wiz worth his Capex. Around noon, stocks jumped up from a decline after a Reuters headline that Iran and the U.S. were actually discussing a deal to open the Strait of ‘when it’s closed everyhting on earth costs more’.
Communication services and health care finished green, but eight of 11 sectors fell. The Dow lagged, but Intel and AMD kept the chip board moving. Earnings from some laggards outside the regular season were boring, Meta showed off a Tamagotchi AI Muse toy, and Morgan Stanley tried to measure the damage from this week's accidental breach of 100 leaked deals.
Stocktwits attention narrowed to GameStop, Costco, First Solar, Unity, and Moderna. GameStop carried the loudest stream after Ryan Cohen bought another 1.15M shares. Costco traders waited through earnings, and Unity bulls argued over whether Meta’s new AI tools help or threaten the company.

After the Bell: Costco topped estimates, but a tariff refund helped the profit beat.

AFTER THE BELL
Costco Delivers, Shares Shrug
Costco Wholesale, the membership warehouse retailer, reported another quarter of strong traffic and spending Thursday. The results beat Wall Street’s targets, but shares barely moved after hours following a regular-session decline.
The RIP: $COST ( ▼ 0.91% ) finished -1.1% and slipped -0.1% after hours. Fiscal Q4 EPS was $6.75 versus $6.54 expected, including a $0.15 tariff-refund benefit. Revenue rose 11% to $95.72B, topping $94.97B expected, while comparable sales climbed 9.4%.
Adjusted comparable sales rose 6.7% excluding gas and currency, digitally enabled sales jumped nearly 20%, and membership fees reached $1.85B. Solid all around. Costco offered no forward guidance, though, and the one-time refund helped the profit beat. At 43 times earnings, investors already expect a packed parking lot.

Cohen Keeps Buying GameStop

GameStop extended its five-session rally Thursday after Chairman and CEO Ryan Cohen disclosed a second open-market purchase in less than two weeks. Cohen bought 1,150,680 shares on Sept. 21 at an average $22.94, spending roughly $26.4M. He bought another 1M shares at $20.38 on Sept. 10.
The RIP: $GME ( ▲ 3.39% ) climbed +3.4% to $25.02, bringing its five-session gain to +9.9%. Cohen directly owns 40.5M shares. Including warrants, his roughly 44.2M-share beneficial stake equals 8.7% and was worth just over $1B at Thursday’s close.
The buying landed as GameStop completed a roughly $1.4B debt swap that issued 55.5M shares and paid $358.4M in cash. Cohen and three directors adding stock gave bulls something to point at after the dilution. The operating business is still shrinking, though. Second-quarter sales fell 18.7%, even as operating income jumped 141% and collectibles sales rose 56.5%.

BlackBerry’s Car Software Carries

BlackBerry, the software company behind the QNX automotive operating system, climbed Thursday after fiscal second-quarter results beat expectations. QNX growth powered the quarter and pushed management to raise its companywide outlook again.
The RIP: $BB ( ▲ 4.18% ) rose +4.2% to $8.73 on 2.3 times normal volume. Adjusted EPS of $0.07 beat $0.04 expected, while revenue jumped 26% to $163.3M versus $142.5M expected. QNX revenue climbed 27% to $80.3M.
BlackBerry raised its fiscal 2027 revenue outlook to $616M–$636M from $594M–$621M. QNX also landed its first Alloy Kore design win, which management expects to generate more than $100M in future royalties.
Secure Communications went the other direction. BlackBerry cut that segment’s revenue outlook to $260M–$270M, citing uncertainty around government contracts and U.S.-Canada trade tensions. The stock has already more than doubled this year, but QNX gave traders another reason to keep the old phone company on screen.
