GameStop Tries To Game The System 🕹️
Meme stock GameStop has been trending heavily over the last week in anticipation of today’s earnings report delivering a positive catalyst. So far, it has provided a bit of a bump for the bulls, but not because of its business results.
The company’s net sales in 2024 fell nearly 28% YoY, with SG&A expenses only falling about 15%. Adjusted EBITDA was $36.1 million vs. $64.7 million in 2023. And yes, it has tons of cash on hand (nearly $5 billion), it’s not because of its operations.
Yes, cash flows from operations are positive, but the company’s main problem is tumbling revenues. Much like AMC, which is betting on Hollywood blockbuster movies to bail them out, GameStop is seemingly waiting for the next console upgrade cycle to help drive business. 🎮️
Until then, it’s just cutting costs, hanging out, and now…investing in Bitcoin!
The Board of Directors updated the company’s investment policy to add Bitcoin as A Treasury Reserve Asset. While the company hasn’t stated how much Bitcoin it will buy or when (thanks to not holding a conference call again), the policy's mere existence has investors and buyers turning bullish. 🪙
Traders are looking for the short-term momentum to continue, as shares rise 7% in the after-hours session. Time will tell if Strategy’s approach works as well for GameStop as many think, given its strong balance sheet and improving cash flows.
Since we’re talking memes and Bitcoin, we might as well mention Dogecoin’s surge after House of Doge bought 10 million tokens for the strategic reserve. Plus, other companies like KULR Technology are hopping on the Bitcoin bandwagon. 🤑
