Chinese Stocks Tumble Over Growth Issues 📉

Temu parent PDD Holdings signaled to investors it may be in short-term trouble after missing revenue expectations. ⚠️

Revenues of $13.64 billion missed expectations of $14.10 billion, even as adjusted earnings rose 122% YoY to beat analyst estimates.

"Looking ahead, revenue growth will inevitably face pressure due to intensified competition and external challenges," PDD Vice President of Finance Jun Liu said in a news release. "Profitability will also likely to be impacted as we continue to invest resolutely." 📊

The message is clear: the company may need to trade earnings growth to continue improving and growing its products. Innovation is key as it faces growing competition from domestic companies like Alibaba and JD.com, as well as international ones like Amazon.

Today’s news sent $PDD shares tumbling 29% and took many Chinese stocks and ETFs with it. Stocktwits sentiment also pushed further into negative territory, ending the day ‘extremely bearish.’ 🔻

Additionally, here is some other noteworthy China news from the day:

EARNINGS
Solar Stocks Have A Mixed Outing 🌦️

Chinese solar component manufacturer Daqo New Energy kicked off today’s solar industry conversation with a wider-than-expected loss and revenue falling 66% YoY. 😨

The average selling price for its Polysilicon was down more than 35% YoY, so even with average production cost falling 3% QoQ, it’s still selling its product at a loss.

Xiang Xu, CEO of Daqo New Energy, said, “The solar industry experienced significant challenges during the second quarter, as market prices fell across the solar value chain to below production costs for nearly the entire industry.”

Oversupply, excessive inventory, and lower prices hurt producers, while high financing costs have weighed on the demand side of the equation. ⚖️

Its challenges have brought the stock down to an interesting technical level, where prices have found support and resistance over the last decade. Still, the Stocktwits community remains hesitant given the weak fundamental outlook, with sentiment sitting in ‘extremely bearish’ territory. 🐻

Interestingly, the solar ETF $TAN shows some signs of stabilization, with Stocktwits sentiment in ‘extremely bullish’ territory. Significant challenges exist for the entire industry, but some players (like First Solar) are clearly faring better than others. ☀️

Time will tell how things shake out, but for now, the interesting mix of fundamental and technical factors is keeping the industry on traders’ and investors’ radars. 🕵️

Marijuana Stocks Just Got Smoked (Again) 😶‍🌫️

Whether you call it marijuana, cannabis, or weed, it always seems to be one step forward and two steps back for this industry. After showing strength since last August on hopes it could be rescheduled at the federal level, industry optimists were once again disappointed. 👎

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has reportedly delayed the final ruling, saying its hearing on Marijuana’s rescheduling proposal will be held on December 2nd.

Industry bulls had been betting that cannabis reform would be enacted before the election. Many analysts believe that if Trump is elected, the path to reform will be much more muddy than if Kamala Harris and the Democrats remain in power. 😐

The added uncertainty is likely why popular industry ETFs like $MSOS traded down double-digits after hours, with prices back toward one-year lows. Stocktwits sentiment is stuck in ‘neutral’ territory as overall frustration around the regulatory environment remains high. 😡
