The Weekend Rip: July 13, 2025
What you need to know for the week ahead.
The Weekend Rip
Happy Weekend!

It was quite the week. Monday opened with fresh trade threats, and the start of a letter-writing campaign with slightly lower tariffs than first announced back in April. As late as Saturday, the president announced a 30% rate on the EU and Mexico starting Aug 1. Still, mid-week equities soared when everyone realized that new tariff numbers meant another tariff pause, and the first earnings results were good for services. Next week are the big six banks, and the start of Q2’s reporting for real, so get ready for the noise.
Let's recap and prep you for the week ahead. 📝
◀️ Markets pulled back Monday as Trump announced fresh tariffs targeting countries that missed trade deal deadlines. Tesla dipped despite a Musk rumor mill for a new political party and renewed attention on his involvement in national policy. Retail investors cooled on BigBear.ai after a major rally, and Robinhood faced backlash from OpenAI over tokenized pre-IPO shares. Bitcoin traded near record highs and CoreWeave shares fell after a $9B merger deal with Core Scientific.
🌏️ On Tuesday, markets held steady, but copper surged after Trump announced a surprise 50% import tariff, sending futures to all-time highs. Regulatory shifts rattled industries: Fair Isaac fell as FHFA approved rival VantageScore for mortgages, solar stocks dropped after green tax breaks were cut, and chemical producers rallied on relaxed Fed oversight. Pharma stocks saw mixed action as Trump teased 200% tariffs. IBM launched its Power11 server, GE Vernova rallied on bullish AI demand, and AppLovin secured a strong price target despite cautious retail interest.
⚡️ Markets bounced Wednesday as Nvidia became the first company to hit a $4 trillion market cap, driven by surging AI chip demand. Bitcoin also reached new highs, while Trump extended the trade pause another three weeks amid fresh tariff threats on 22 countries. The FOMC minutes revealed a split: 10 members favor rate cuts this year, while seven prefer holding steady. Trump called for Powell’s removal and teased replacements, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and advisors Kevin Warsh and Kevin Hassett. Earnings season kicks off Thursday with Delta Airlines. Buckle up.
🐂 Markets soared Thursday as Delta Airlines beat earnings expectations and restored full-year guidance, lifting airline stocks across the board. Bitcoin hit fresh highs, and a strong 30-year bond auction helped ease yields. Meanwhile, tariffs spared travel but hit consumer staples: Conagra warned of inflation pain, and Levi flagged supply chain risks despite raising guidance. In M&A, the Pentagon became MP Materials’ largest shareholder with a $400M investment to build a domestic rare earth magnet supply chain, signaling a strategic shift away from China dependence. Bit Mining doubled after announcing a $300M Solana treasury pivot, and Autodesk fell on acquisition rumors.
😢 On Friday, markets ended the week on a down note, with Friday capping a choppy stretch that saw record highs shadowed by fresh tariff threats—Canada now faces a potential 35% levy if a deal isn’t struck by July 21. Early earnings reports revealed resilient consumer spending, even amid rising costs, and next week the big banks kick off Q2 earnings in earnest. Nvidia and Bitcoin continued their record-breaking rallies, while Walgreens approved its $10B take-private deal and Kraft Heinz is reportedly preparing to split the business. Retail sentiment turned cautious on small caps after their sharp multi-month rally, and traders now brace for what earnings season might deliver.
🤩 This week's Stocktwits Top 25 showed outperformance vs. the indexes. Trump sent two more tariff letters, bringing the total to 27 or so nations that were tweeted at in the past week.
