What Happened?

📈 On Monday, chip stocks surged ahead of CES 2025. Nvidia made new all-time highs ahead of CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote CES speech, FuboTV found a suitor in Disney, and Getty Images announced a merger with rival Shutterstock.

📉 On Tuesday, Nvidia faced a reversal of fortune after Jensen Huang’s speech failed to provide material details about the company’s next product line. November JOLTs data dampened rate cut hopes, JPMorgan Chase called workers back to the office, and the first “Trends With Friends” of 2025 broke down the fartcoin frenzy.

😱 On Wednesday, quantum computing stocks crashed after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang cast doubts on the industry’s timeline. Constellation Energy announced a $17 billion deal to acquire Calpine Corp., and Brian Shannon (@alphatrends) walked traders through how he’s managing risk in this choppy environment.

🫡 On Thursday, U.S. markets were closed for the National Day Of Mourning, which honored former President Jimmy Carter.

😐️ On Friday, good news was bad news again, as stronger-than-expected jobs data pushed rate cut hopes out even further. Constellation Energy and Constellation Brands had very different trading sessions, social media stocks came back into focus, and “Daily Rip Live” co-hosts discussed their trading plans for 2025.

💒 Wedding registries shrink to accommodate cramped living quarters. With record home prices impacting household formation, those who are tying the knot are shrinking their lives to fit into cramped apartments or scaled-down starter homes. As a result, they’re passing on the stand mixer or barista-grade espresso machine, opting for smaller gifts like a knife set, rice cooker, or other “small kitchen contraptions.” Axios has more.

🤝 EU approves $35B Synopsys and Ansys merger. The European Commission (EC) has given the green light for Synopsys to acquire Ansys but requires them to sell off various software products to preserve competition. The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched its own antitrust investigation back in August and indicated earlier this week it would be willing to accept the proposed divestment offer, too. 🚚 Autonomous trucking companies have sued over the 1970s safety rules. The industry is battling with federal safety officials over the best way to warn other motorists when a self-driving truck has stopped on the highway shoulder. Now, Aurora Innovation is taking the fight to court, suing the U.S. Department of Transportation, claiming it “arbitrarily” rejected the industry’s idea for an alternative to the physical “warning devices” that are required to be put around the vehicle.
